Description
Caught these beautiful flowers (Arctotis - Flamingo) during sundown last weekend at the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum (California).
Background on the shot:
1. Taken outdoors, laying flat on ground to capture sunlight coming through petals.
2. Sunny, mild conditions (not windy).
3. Taken within 20 min. of sunset.
4. Nikon D200, UV filter, 105mm lens, no flash, no tripod.
5. Shutter speed: 1/125 sec., F-stop: 5.6, ISO: 200. Shot in RAW.
6. Post processing with Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0.1 for Mac: cropped slightly, removed distraction in lower left-hand corner with cloning tool, reduced noise around flower petals (NeatImage plugin), duplicated layer (soft light at 20%). Probably took 45 min. all told.
To me, the key to this shot was
a) the time of day to get the best lighting; and
b) positioning myself low enough to capture the light properly and ensuring a dark background so the colored petals would really stand out.
Thanks to Derek [link] for the title recommendation.
